Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
